Introduction of AUN:
The ASEAN University Network (AUN) was established in 1995 through the signing of the AUN Charter by Ministers responsible for Higher Education from ASEAN countries, alongside the Agreement on the Establishment of the AUN signed by the presidents, rectors, and vice chancellors of participating universities, culminating in the formation of the AUN Board of Trustees.
Conceived to foster a regional identity and solidarity while nurturing ASEAN talents, the AUN serves as a collaborative platform for the region's leading higher education institutions. Since its inception, the AUN has remained steadfastly dedicated to its mission outlined in the preamble to its charter.
Today, the AUN stands as a widely recognized network vital to the development of an active and esteemed ASEAN community in higher education. Its accomplishments in enhancing the capacity of ASEAN human resources and elevating the quality of education among member universities were lauded by the Meeting of Ministers for Education in ASEAN Countries. Leveraging the strengths and expertise of its members, the AUN plays a pivotal role in advancing the integration of the ten ASEAN nations into a cohesive ASEAN Community, thereby reducing the development gap among them—a fundamental aspiration of ASEAN.
Introduction of AUN-QA:
The ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) is a vital component of the AUN, established to ensure and enhance the quality of higher education across the ASEAN region. Founded in response to the increasing demand for globally competitive graduates and the need for standardized quality assurance mechanisms, AUN-QA has played a pivotal role in shaping and elevating the academic landscape within ASEAN.
Formally instituted as part of the AUN, AUN-QA operates with a mission to promote quality assurance in higher education institutions (HEIs) through rigorous evaluation, benchmarking, and capacity building. Its primary objective is to foster a culture of continuous improvement and excellence in teaching, research, and service across member universities.
AUN-QA's framework for quality assurance is comprehensive and adaptable, designed to accommodate the diverse contexts and priorities of HEIs within the region. It encompasses various aspects of institutional performance, including curriculum design, teaching and learning methodologies, faculty development, student assessment, research output, infrastructure, and governance structures.
Central to AUN-QA's approach is its system of peer review, which involves expert evaluators from within and outside the ASEAN region conducting comprehensive assessments of participating HEIs. These evaluations are based on a set of established criteria and standards, ensuring objectivity, transparency, and credibility in the assessment process.
Through its rigorous evaluation processes, AUN-QA aims to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement within participating HEIs, facilitating targeted interventions and capacity-building initiatives to enhance overall institutional quality. Moreover, AUN-QA serves as a platform for knowledge exchange and best practice sharing among member universities, promoting collaboration and cooperation in advancing educational excellence within ASEAN.
Over the years, AUN-QA has made significant strides in promoting quality assurance and fostering a culture of excellence in higher education across the ASEAN region. Its efforts have contributed to the enhancement of academic standards, the internationalization of curricula, and the development of a skilled and competitive workforce capable of meeting the challenges of the 21st century.
As ASEAN continues to strive towards greater regional integration and competitiveness, AUN-QA remains committed to its mission of ensuring and enhancing the quality of higher education, thereby contributing to the sustainable development and prosperity of the ASEAN community as a whole.
